10 years ago this week….

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Softball — Mallory Olson delivers a three-run triple to spark a six-run first inning as the Stillwater softball team tops Forest Lake 7-4 for its fifth victory in a row. Olson finishes with three hits in the game. The Ponies (8-4) stretch the winning streak to seven straight with victories over St. Bernard’s — handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season — and Centennial before falling to North St. Paul 1-0 in the championship game of the Polar Classic.

Baseball — Facing a team averaging nine runs per game, Brett Maxwell throws a two-hit shutout as the Stillwater baseball team tops Woodbury 2-0 in an SEC game. The Ponies do not commit and error and turn double plays in support of the senior hurler. Maxwell also pushes the winning run across on a fielder’s choice in the third inning.

Girls golf — Senior Paige Bromen earns medalist honors in cold and windy conditions as the Ponies hold off Roseville 202-206 to win a Suburban East Conference girls’ golf meet at North Oaks Golf Club. Kali Sherod, Megan Ulrich and Lauren Sleiter also contribute to the winning team card for the Ponies.

Boys golf — Chad Bischoff claims medalist honors with a 76 as the Stillwater boys’ golf team places sixth in the 14-team White Bear Lake Invitational at Dellwood Hills Golf Club.
