WOODBURY — The road to a sixth straight Suburban East Conference title became a lot more difficult as Stillwater fell to the Raptors 12-11 in a girls’ lacrosse game on Wednesday at East Ridge.
The Ponies (1-1 SEC, 2-1) have won five straight conference titles, but that streak might be in jeopardy following the loss to the Raptors, who Stillwater defeated 17-5 in last year’s Section 4 championship game.
“They might be challenged by Cretin, but it was most likely the conference championship game,” Ponies coach Rick Reidt said. “They’re in the driver’s seat now, but our focus is not to worry about that, but get ready for sections.”
Kate Sheely scored four goals to lead the Ponies, who opened up a 10-8 lead with less than 12 minutes remaining on Sheely’s final tally. The Raptors scored twice in the next two minutes to even the score and pulled away for a 12-10 lead with four minutes remaining.
Carter Sanderson scored with three minutes left as Stillwater climbed within a goal, but the Ponies turned the ball over after winning the ensuing faceoff and East Ridge was able to run out the clock.
“They have a very senior team with strong attackers that really bury the ball in the net,” Reidt said. “They played well and it was a good victory for them.”
Megan Yoshida finished with five goals to lead the Raptors.
“Kate Sheely had her best game of the year for us and Sarah Stickler stepped in on defense after we gave up three early goals and played a good game,” Reidt said.
