10 years ago this week….

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Boys basketball — Senior Andrew Boldt is chosen the Most Valuable Player for the Suburban East Conference champion Stillwater boys’ basketball team. Boldt, Andrew Schmiesing and Kevin Gullikson each receive all-conference honors for the Ponies (22-6).

MSHSL — Following a recommendation by the Minnesota State High School League placement committee, the MSHSL board unanimously supports that decision in placing Cretin-Derham Hall in the Suburban East Conference. The St. Paul school previously requested — and was denied — admittance into nine metro area conferences, including its first choice the Classic Suburban Conference.

Baseball — Needing just 74 pitches, Brett Maxwell allows four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in the complete game as the Stillwater baseball team improves to 3-0 with a 5-1 nonconference victory over Irondale. Maxwell and Garrett Loman also provided two hits apiece at the plate.

Boys track and field — Ricky Furseth, Joe Moore, Brian Odegaard and Jake Watson of Stillwater set a new all-time state record while winning the 4×1,600 relay in a time of 17:44.3 at the Pony Classic. The foursome shattered the previous state record of 17:49.8, which was set by former Ponies Luke Watson, Sean Graham, Pete Prince and Joel Solmonson in 1998. Stillwater finished fourth in the team standings of an event that included eight of the top 10 ranked teams in Minnesota — not to mention team champion Fargo South of North Dakota.
