Girls hockey: Vezina chosen MVP for Ponies

Senior Jane Vezina was named the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater girls’ hockey team during its postseason awards banquet.

Vezina, who joined Taylor Naugle, Samantha Scheid and Sierra Smith in serving as captains, ranked among team leaders in scoring with 11 goals and 14 assists.

Vezina was joined in earning All-Suburban East Conference honors by teammates Taylor Naugle, Ali Biagini and Brinna Dochniak. Scheid, Georgia Eger, Carlie Hart, Smith and Lauren Greeder were honorable mention all-conference selections who helped the Ponies finish with an 18-9-1 record, including 13-4-1 to place third in the Suburban East Conference. The Ponies received the No. 2 seed for the Section 4AA tournament and were defeated by eventual state champion Hill-Murray 4-1 in the section finals.

Vezina also garnered the team’s Most Determined Player Award.

Naugle led a balanced Ponies scoring attack with 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points while Biagini (18 goals, 9 assists) and Hart (11-16) each finished with 27 points. Smith (11-14—25) and Eger (12-11—23) also helped carry the load offensively this season for a team that featured 12 players with 10 or more points.

Goaltender Caitlin Carter, who posted a 12-6 record with a 2.62 goals against average, was named the Most Improved Player for the Ponies. Taylor Gulenchyn was honored as the Rookie of the Year and Smith received the Rink Rat Award.

Dochniak received the Norris Award as the team’s best defenseman and Samantha Scheid was presented the Hobey Baker Character Award. Scheid was also an Academic All-State selection and joined Smith, Monique Rondeau, Paulina Scheid, Hannah Anderson, Kallie Clements, Olivia Konigson, Annika Anderson and Briana Russell on the Ponies All-Academic Team.

Greeder took home the Hustle Award for her positive attitude and effort.

Also announced at the banquet is that Smith, Dochniak and Hart will serve as captains for the 2014-15 team.

Among the additional awards presented, Carly Fedorowski and Ana Reding were named co-MVPs for the Stillwater JV team, which finished with a 23-2 record. The Ponies claimed the championship at the Edina Tournament and their only two losses came against East Ridge.
