Softball: Ponies pull away from C-DH

ST. PAUL — Stillwater’s first appearance outdoors coincided with its season opener, but the Ponies adjusted to elements in taking down Cretin-Derham Hall 15-4 in Wednesday’s Suburban East Conference softball game.

“It was our first day we were able to be outside, whether practice or game,” Ponies coach Bob Beedle said. “There was a lot of sun and wind out there so there were a couple balls that normally we would catch or got late jumps on some balls that normally we would get to, but it was a solid performance.”

The Ponies (1-0 SEC, 1-0) belted out 10 hits and took control with six runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Stillwater carried a 4-2 lead into the fourth inning before batting around to push six runs across — all with two outs.

Natalie Ingram started the inning with a base hit before Lauren Jordan walked and Carlie Hart reached on an error, one of four committed by the Raiders (0-2, 0-2). Lauren Greeder also reached on an error as Ingram and Jordan scampered home. Rachel Hartwig added a base hit and Natalie Gerber followed with a three-run homer before the Raiders finally recorded the third out.

“After the first time through the batting order we made some adjustments, put the ball in play hard and put a lot of pressure on them,” Beedle said.

Ingram drove a one-hop double to the fence for her third hit of the game to lead off the fifth as Stillwater added five more runs. Jordan and Caitlin Delander walked to load the bases and Hart followed with an RBI base hit. Greeder also delivered a two-run double in the inning.

Gerber finished with three hits and six RBIs while Hartwig drove in four runs at the plate and notched the victory on the mound. Hartwig allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in the five-inning complete game.

“I thought she had a steady opening game,” Beedle said. “I’ve seen her pitch better, but it was a pretty solid outing. She stayed ahead of the count and pitched steady, mixing her pitches up well.

“I thought it was a good first game. We’ve got two more games the next couple of days and when we get a week or so behind us we’ll know more about where we’re at.”
