Girls track and field: Stillwater places 11th at invite

 

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Stillwater placed 11th out of 18 teams competing in the University of Wisconsin-River Falls indoor girls’ track and field invitational on Saturday. The Ponies scored in six different events to total 24 points in their season opener.

Suburban East Conference rival East Ridge took top honors with 88 points while Anoka (73.5) and host River Falls (71.5) followed in second and third.

Stillwater was scheduled to host Roseville in an outdoor meet on Tuesday, but that was cancelled because of ice and snow remaining on the track at SAHS.

Haley Tholen cleared 5-0 to place second in the high jump with a new personal best to provide the top individual finish for the Ponies. Rachel Amos (9.48) and Cela Peterson (9.77) finished fifth and eighth for Stillwater in the 55 hurdles while Amos added a seventh-place showing in the triple jump with a distance of 33-6 1/4.

The Ponies scored fifth-place finishes in the sprint medley (4:46.62) and 4×800 (10:24.35) relays and added an eighth-place effort in the 4×400 relay (4:28.09).

n Stillwater fared better while placing fourth in the 11-team JV meet at UW-River Falls on Friday. The Ponies scored 52 points to finish behind Anoka (85), Hudson (64) and East Ridge (64). Sarah McCarthy won the 400-meter race for the Ponies in a time of 1:06.55 while Rachel Johnson (10.01) and Bell Mulcahy (10.23) finished second and third in the 55 hurdles.
