10 years ago this week….


This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.


Boys swimming and diving — Senior Erik Semrud is chosen the Most Valuable Athlete for the Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team following its third consecutive undefeated dual meet season, which includes conference and section titles.


Hockey — Sophomore Chelsey Jones is honored as the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater girls’ hockey team (18-8-1) while Scott Lang is chosen the MVP for the Stillwater boys (8-18).


Colleges — Stillwater graduate Sarah Cotner receives the Most Improved Player Award by the St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team. SCSU also benefits from three former Ponies on its fifth-ranked softball team, including Cally Stewart, Megan Fuches and Jessica Preiner. Former Stillwater goaltender Adam Berkhoel represents the University of Denver men’s hockey team on the All-WCHA Third Team. Winona State University pitcher/outfielder Andrew Polehna of Stillwater is named the NSIC Player of the Week in baseball.


Gymnastics — Individual state vault champion Danielle Sneden is voted the Most Valuable Athlete by her teammates on the Stillwater gymnastics team, which finishes third in the Section 4AA meet with a season-best score of 142.5.
