Age 84, of Stillwater
Passed away peacefully on March 24, 2014. Preceded in death by parents, William and Edith (Lamb); twin siblings, Harold (VerDene) and Howard (Dorothy); nephews, Gary, James, and Thomas. Survived by wife of 44 years, Cleone (Hohnstadt); children, Gayle (Karen) of Wales, WI, David (Barbara) of Maplewood, Andrew of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Robert (Maureen) of Green Bay, WI, Michael (Amanda) of Waukesha, WI. Don’s early years were filled with the pleasures and hard work of life on a small farm in rural Iowa. Following graduation from Pilot Mound H.S., farming with his father, marriage to Edna Wayne, and the birth of two sons, he decided that finances dictated a change in career direction. He was in the forefront of a new trend in education: men teaching in elementary grades. He completed a two-year program at Boone Junior college and began teaching at Maquoketa, Iowa. While continuing summer coursework at Bemidji, MN, State College, he taught at Edgerton, WI, Forest Lake, MN, and concluded his 31 year career at Stillwater, MN. During that time he married Cleone and added his third son. In the summer of 1997, he began His sixteen year cancer (and other medical conditions) journey during which his doctors nicknamed him, Miracle Man. They also called him “Mystery Man” because his body never seemed to react as they expected. His life interests could have earned him his own Superman “S” insignia shirt. He was a singer, a storyteller, a sportsman, a survivor, and a saint/sinner who claimed his salvation. A man of dreams, he lived to accomplish most of them: travel trailer trips, a lake cabin, North Shore vacations, numerous fishing trips, Hawaii and Alaska jaunts, a home and acreage to “farm”, and financial security. He was also a man dedicated to his interests and he was very proud to say that he had sung in choirs for 60 years. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 11 AM at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 11194 36th St. N., Lake Elmo. Visitation Friday, March 28, 2014 from 4-8 PM at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd (NW corner of Hwy 36 & Co Rd 5), Stillwater and starting at 9:30 AM SATURDAY at church.
