The Roe Family Singers, a good-time, old-time bluegrass band, will perform a benefit concert at Memorial Lutheran Church of Afton at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 9.
The public is invited to this concert, and all proceeds from the free-will offering will benefit Valley Outreach, a nonprofit organization serving St. Croix Valley residents in need of food, clothing, household essentials and emergency financial assistance.
“Kim and I firmly believe in the idea of community and that it’s important to give back to the community,” said Quillan Roe, who leads the Roe Family Singers with his wife, Kim. “The Lord has given us a special gift, and we want to share it. The kind of music we play is truly ‘family’ music, and we hope to see a lot of families in the audience at Memorial.”
With a mix of original music and contemporary takes on old-time, traditional and gospel tunes, the Roe Family Singers raise a ruckus with every performance. The group has won numerous honors since forming in 2004. Most recently the band was named “World’s Best” at annual Battles of the Jug Bands in 2011 and 2012. The band also received the prestigious McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Performing Musicians in 2011.
In addition to the group’s many awards, Quillan and Kim Roe won the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association’s duet competition at the 2012 Minnesota State Fair, and Kim Roe was named Best Female Vocalist by City Pages in 2006.
Each of the five band members who will perform at Memorial are well-known and reputable musicians-about-town: Kim Roe, autoharp, washboard, Appalachian clogging, and vocal; Quillan Roe, banjo, guitar and vocal; Eric Paulson, upright bass; Ric Lee, fiddle; and Rich Rue, resonator guitar.
Coffee and treats in the church’s fellowship center will follow the performance.
Memorial Lutheran Church is located in Afton, two blocks west of the St. Croix River on County Highway 18 at 15730 Afton Blvd. S.
