Youth and Family Series opens with ‘Aesop’s Fables’ a Festival Theatre

Festival Theatre’s arts education programming for 2014 gets under way with the first Youth and Family Theatre production on stage this week. “Aesop’s Fables” opened Thursday, March 6.

As the kingpin of the theater company’s arts education programming, the Youth and Family Series brings local youth actors as young as 5 years of age — in this case 18 cast members — alongside professionals for an in-depth rehearsal process. Staff member have high ideals in the professional course that has been made developmentally appropriate for young learners. The arts-making process is one which communicates that it’s okay to make mistakes and that taking artistic risks is done together, in a team environment.

Looking ahead to summer, Festival Theatre will again hold Creativity Camp at various locations. Creativity Camp is a week-long day camp for ages 5-12, held Monday through Friday during July and August. The camps focus on literary arts, drama, creative movement and visual arts, using a process-based approach to learning. More information and registration forms are available on the arts education page of the theatre’s website.

Also this summer the Festival Theatre Conservatory for Young Performers will audition high school-age students for the next Youth and Family Theatre Series production, pairing them with the summer company of professional guest artists. Now in its fourth year, the Festival Theatre Conservatory for Young Performers seeks to provide valuable experience for youth actors who are ready to take the next step. This year, the conservatory will culminate in a production of Aristophanes’ comedy classic, “The Frogs.”

The Youth and Family Theatre Series is now in its seventh year at Festival Theatre. “Aesop’s Fables” runs March 6-16, with nine public performances Thursdays through Sundays.

Tickets for the Youth and Family series are $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for youth ages 3-18. Families with very young children can make reservations for Thursday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m., which has been set aside as Family Night, with no charge for ages 2 and under.

Festival Theatre is located in downtown St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin at 210 N. Washington St.
