Girls basketball: Ponies turn back Woodbury on Senior Night

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 48-43 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury at Stillwater Area High School.

Paige Becker, who along with Maggie Ogren are the only seniors on the roster, tossed in a game-high 20 points to help the Ponies sweep the season series against the Royals. With the victory, Stillwater finished 5-13 in conference play and improved to 8-18 overall — a three-game improvement to move up to seventh in the SEC standings and to more victories than a year ago. The Ponies face fourth-seeded Tartan in the Section 4AAAA quarterfinals on Wednesday.

“Our seniors did a great job, as they did all year, playing hard and leading by example,” Ponies coach Gerard Coury said. “It was a good game to get us ready for section play on Wednesday.”

The Ponies led 26-20 at halftime and extended the lead to as many as 12 points in the second half before the Royals (6-20) charged back with a lift from Cecile Kieger, who scored 17 points.

“We just went on a long scoring drought and gave up some points in transition,” Coury said. “Kieger made some plays for them in the second half and we missed some free throws and a front end.”

The Ponies shot just 9-17 at the free throw line, but Becker drained two down the stretch to help the Ponies build a five-point lead after Woodbury pulled within a point with about a minute remaining.

Rilee Day at 15 points for the Ponies while Erin Thiets recorded team-high totals in rebounds (8), assists (5) and steals (3).

Elizabeth Edinger added 13 points for the Royals, who have lost 19 of their last 20 games after starting the season with a 5-1 record.

“They run a very patient offense and we just wanted to disrupt them as much as possible,” Coury said. “For the most part we did a good job of that.”
