Wrestling: Stillwater posts 2-1 record at FL tourney

FOREST LAKE — After taking a thumping in the opening round against Class AA state power Foley, the Stillwater wrestling team turned in victories over LeSueur-Henderson and Big Lake to post a 2-1 record in Saturday’s Forest Lake Invitational.

Will Harter collected a 3-2 victory over Mitch Rothfork at 113 pounds and that was the lone triumph for the Ponies (3-4 Suburban East Conference, 12-15) in a 59-3 loss to Foley, which is ranked No. 2 in Class AA. The Ponies responded with a 59-15 victory over LeSueur-Henderson and a 36-31 victory over Big Lake.

“It was one of our better days,” Keller said. “Even though the score (against Foley) was way out of the park, we wrestled pretty darn good for who we were wrestling.”

Harter, a seventh-grader, won all three of his matches on Saturday.

The Ponies dropped just three matches against LeSueur-Henderson, with Harter, Gavin Keogh (145 pounds), John Huntley (152), Grant Wohlwend (170) and Palecek (285) each registering pins.

It was a tighter battle against Big Lake, which held a 31-24 lead over the Ponies until Hausken and Palecek closed out the match with pins at 220 and 285 pounds.

n Stillwater qualified three wrestlers for Saturday’s Ninth Grade and Under Wrestling League individual state tournament at Champlin Park. Competing in the Region 5 qualifier at Chisago Lakes this past weekend, Tyler Olson finished first at heavyweight to earn his spot in the state field. He will be joined at state by teammates Connor Weiss (152 pounds) and James Huntley (160 pounds), who each placed second in their weight classes.
