Wrestling: Ponies finish third at Hudson tourney

WHITE BEAR LAKE — It was a busy weekend for the Stillwater wrestling team, which split two matches in a Suburban East Conference triangular at White Bear Lake on Friday and followed that up with a 2-2 record to place third at the six-team Hudson Tournament on Saturday.

Competing for the first time since the Rochester tournament on Dec. 20-21, the Ponies (2-4 SEC, 7-11) defeated Cretin-Derham Hall 60-21 on Friday before falling to the rival Bears in the nightcap 42-27.

The Bears and Ponies were each missing some varsity regulars, but White Bear Lake prevailed in nine of 14 matches. The Bears opened up a 14-0 lead with victories in the first three matches before Gage LeBourgeois provided an 11-6 win at 126 pounds. Stillwater’s other victories came via pin by Collin Olson (160 pounds), Grant Wohlwend (170) and Haden Hausken (220) while Peter Palecek won by forfeit at heavyweight.

All seven of Stillwater’s seven victories — not including three additional forfeits — were via pins in the victory over Cretin-Derham Hall.

n Stillwater is among a group of 24 teams that have qualified for the ninth-grade-and-under state tournament, which is being held in Hastings on Saturday. Stillwater finished with a 7-2 record in the league to earn a spot in the state field for just the third time in approximately two decades, according to Ponies coach Rich Keller.

n The Stillwater wrestling program will be contributing to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund when it hosts a TakeDown Cancer event as part of its annual Pony Stampede varsity tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18 and the Stillwater Youth Tourney on Jan. 19.

There will be a raffle, with a snowblower offered as one of the top prizes. T-shirts and bracelets will also be sold and a memorial wall is also being created for those wishing to honor a loved one impacted by cancer.
