Alpine skiing: Ponies sweep conference competition

The Stillwater girls’ and boys’ alpine ski teams each won for the second time in as many Suburban East Conference meets after prevailing at Afton Alps on Jan. 2.

Led by Story Schwantes in third place, the Ponies featured three of the top five finishers to hold off runner-up East Ridge 719-644 for the top spot in the girls’ competition. Hastings followed in third place with 616 points. Natalie Gjermo and Maddie Neubauer followed in fourth and fifth place for the Ponies.

The Stillwater boys placed seven skiers in the top 14 to score 730 points and easily supass East Ridge (582) and Forest Lake (566) in the team standings. Kyle Szczepanski, Cory Carlsen and Sam Skaret finished fourth through sixth to lead the Ponies while Westin Anderson and Brent Barclay followed in eighth and 10th place.

“It was a brutally cold night — my feet still haven’t thawed out,” Ponies coach Mary Parcheta said. “In spite of the cold, the athletes did really great. Their goal is to be undefeated in the conference and so far we are on our way.”
