Gymnastics: Raptors hand Stillwater first loss

WOODBURY — Facing it’s stiffest competition of the season, the Stillwater gymnastics team produced a season-high score of 132.325, but could not keep pace with East Ridge and it’s total of 141.15 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference meet at East Ridge High School.

“They have a number of new gymnasts on their team and are doing some really big gymnastics,” Ponies coach Traci Swenson said. “We knew that they have already been scoring in the 140s so we went into the meet with a goal to improve our performances from the first three meet, and we were happy with that success.”

The Ponies (2-1 SEC, 2-1) started the meet with a season-best total of 33.55 in the bars, led by Sidnee Ronsberg with a score of 8.65.

Stillwater received its highest score in the vault at 34.725, led by Danielle Keran with a score of 9.0. Ronsberg was next for the Ponies at 8.725. Maddie Steffl and Hannah Haslach completed the scoring in the event with matching 8.5s. Rachel Murphy wasn’t far behind with a score of 8.225.

“We had improved vaults,” Swenson said. “We have a group of about five or six girls who  have been and are continuing to increase their difficulty on vault and they really showed that we are going to have a battle for varsity vault positions — as our JV vault team scored less than 0.3 lower than our varsity vault team.

“We’re looking forward to the holiday break when our tsukahara vaulters will have time to put in more numbers to increase consistency and difficulty.”

Keran also led the Ponies in the floor (8.7) and beam (8.5). Ronsberg followed with an 8.5 in the floor and Steffl was next at 8.25.

“Maddie showed her consistency on floor with a good routine,” Swenson said. “Sidnee also showed consistency on floor. It’s really easy to watch her on floor because there is no doubt about any of her skills.”

Keran finished third in the all-around with a score of 34.7. Megan Trolien (36.5) and Wren Anderson (35.8) of East Ridge occupied the top two spots in the all-around.

“Our focus this season is going to be to work for a steady increase and improvement each week and (Tuesday’s) meet was a good step in that direction for the team,” Swenson said.

n The Stillwater JV team remained undefeated this season while recording a 126.65-100.5 victory over the Raptors. Taylor Intihar placed second in the all-around with a score of 27.95. The Ponies posted at least the top four scores in all four events, with first-place finishes by Scottland Adkins (vault), Maddie Steffl (bars and beam) and Natalie Jantschek (floor) to set the pace.
