Boys hockey: Stillwater improves to 4-1 in conference play

Andrew Hoy and Simon Sagissor each scored their first-ever varsity goals to help spark a scoring outburst as Stillwater knocked off Forest Lake 7-1 in Monday’s late afternoon Suburban East Conference boys’ hockey game at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

The Ponies (4-1 SEC, 4-1) scored four times in the second period and held a 40-19 advantage in shots on goal.

“Obviously it was an afternoon game so it was a little different for both teams playing at that time, but I thought we were ready to go,” Stillwater coach Matt Doman said. “I know we ended up with 40 shots on net and that was our big message. If you watch good hockey teams at any level, they get pucks to the net and they get guys crashing and I thought we did a really good job of that tonight.”

Hoy scored with just 37 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Ponies a 1-0 lead. John Heddle and Sam Sagissor scored just seconds part in the second period for a three-goal cushion before the Rangers finally got on the board with a goal from Brandon Rogers.

Devin Cates and Simon Sagissor each scored in the final three minutes of the period for a 5-1 Stillwater lead.

“I thought we did a really good job defensively and that is going to lead to offense,” Doman said. “That’s something we talk about with the boys all the time. If we’re good defensively, we’re going to get our chance to score goals.”

Eleven different Ponies collected at least one point.

Josh Benson turned away 18 shots in goal for the Ponies.

Stillwater 5, Hastings 4 (OT)

Despite spotting Hastings a three-goal lead in the second period, but the Ponies rallied to score in the final seconds of regulation and again in the overtime session to pull out a 5-4 overtime victory over Hastings in Saturday’s SEC game at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

After pulling the goaltender in favor of an extra skater, Mitch Reinke scored with just 29 seconds left in regulation to the game and force overtime. Time was also winding down in the extra session when Devin Cates scored the game-winner on an assist by Zach Eder-Zdechlik with just 25 seconds remaining.

“Really, if you settle for a tie there, those 1 to 2 points can make all the difference in the world,” Ponies coach Matt Doman said.

Jack Manning provided a much-needed boost for the Ponies with his goal at 11:13 of the second period after the Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

“It’s huge. If we go in down 3-0 I think it’s probably a different game,” Doman said. πWe had some pretty good chances in the second, but weren’t able to finish.”

Stillwater facing a two-goal deficit entering the third, Sam Sagissor scored less than two minutes into the period and John Heddle evened the score at 3-all with his tally at 5:33. Mike Junker scored the second of his two goals as Hastings regained a 4-3 lead at 7:41, but it would not stand after Reinke’s late heroics to tie the game.

“I was pretty disappointed with the way we started the game and, really, into the second period,” Doman said. “We started to do some things better, but the fact is if we’re not a hard working team committed to play tough and gritty then we’re pretty average. If we play hard and do the little things right, we can be pretty good. Hopefully they get the message.”

Daniel Ahrendt finished with 18 saves, including four in overtime, in goal for the Ponies.
