Advent workshop set for Dec. 17

The Benedictine Center in Maplewood is presenting an Advent workshop called “Where Does Christ Dwell?” which will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17. The cost is $25.

This session will examine the possibility that Christ not only dwells in your own heart, but also in the hearts of everyone else — even people who offend you or you don’t like.

It will be led by Father Michael Byron, associate professor of Theology at Saint Paul Seminary and pastor of St. Pascal’s Church in St. Paul.

St. Michael’s choir bake sale

The Church of St. Michael in Stillwater has its annual bake sale after all masses Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 15. Proceeds benefit the church choirs.

Items for purchase will include cookies, bars, candy and bread.

Programs at St. Andrew’s

St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi offers several programs in the coming month. The church is at 900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi. For more information on programs, call 651-762-9141.

Here are some of the programs being offered:

• Yogadevotion classes begin Jan. 6. Yogadevotion is a practice of breath, prayer and movement led by a trained yoga instructor. Yogadevotion is intended to encourage healthy living and a peaceful presence. People of all skill levels are welcome.

The seven-week session is Jan. 6 through Feb. 24 with no class on Jan. 20. The cost is $50.

• Practicing in the Presence — 9-10 a.m. Mondays. The class is open to all ages and will be in Sanctuary Room 204.

• Practicing in the Presence/Yin Yoga — 5:30-6:15 Mondays in the Great Hall. Yin Yoga poses are intended to work passively with the fascia rather than actively with the muscles. Class will require props such as a block, strap and blanket/pillow for the closing meditation. Participants may bring their own props from home or purchase the first night of the class.

• Practicing in the Presence – 6:30 p.m. Mondays. This class is open to all skill levels from beginner to advanced and is in the Great Hall.

Men’s spirituality group Dec. 23

Men wanting to integrate contemplative prayer into their busy lives will find support in a men’s contemplative spirituality group that meets on the fourth Monday of every month. Its next gathering is 7-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 at the Benedictine Center in Maplewood.

Tim Marzen, a Benedictine oblate and spiritual director leads the group, which has existed almost ten years and welcomes newcomers and other men interested in learning more about the spiritual life. Each two-hour session includes scripture, prayer and conversations.

A free will offering will be accepted.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve in a new way

The Benedictine Center in Maplewood is offering day-long retreat that will help people celebrate New Year’s Eve in a place of silence and peace. Called “On the Crest of a New Year,” this retreat will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31.

The $50 cost includes meals. For those who want to stay overnight, an $80 cost includes lodging and meals.

The retreat will be led by Carol Rennie and Pat Kilbane, who will guide participants in a day of reflection, prayer, conversation and silence and help them consider where they have been in 2013 and what might await them in the new year ahead.

Rennie is a Benedictine sister and spiritual director. Kilbane is a Benedictine oblate and spiritual director.
