Tan for a cause

An event with an 18-year history will repeat itself again this year at Boss Tanning.

The event, hosted by the company, aims to stock food shelves with food right when it’s most needed.

“We started it for the first time 18 years ago at Thanksgiving because we heard that the food shelf in Stillwater, like others, are short of food right around that time,” business owner Kris Wohlers said.

The business offers free tanning in exchange for a food donation to the food shelf. This year the event takes place Nov. 16.

“It’s any food donation,” Wohlers said. “We’ve had people bring in a can of soup to two cases of food. If anyone brings a donation in, they get to tan for free on this day. We once had someone bring in five or six bags full of food.”

Though Wohlers doesn’t have a specific goal that she wants to meet, she wants everyone to bring in what they can, when they can.

“I think it keeps going because it supports the community and everything that’s donated is kept in the local area,” Wohlers said.

Boss Tanning collects tons of food each year and continues to keep growing and gain recognition with the event.

“We’ve had people calling us for weeks to see when it is, and they just keep calling and calling and calling,” Wohlers said. “It’s important because of the way the economy is, and I feel like this is a good way to give back to people in need.”

The food drive takes place 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 16. Boss Tanning is located at 1451 Stillwater Blvd N, Stillwater, MN 55082.
