This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Football — Paul Fortman kicks six extra points in as many tries to break Soren Gam’s previous school record of 32 consecutive PATs set in 1975 as the Ponies defeat Tartan 45-17 in the Section 3AAAAA semifinals. Fortman, who also punts and plays strong safety, has successfully booted 37 in a row and 41 of 42 on the season. Jay Higgins and Jon Ylinen rush for 114 and 108 yards to pace Stillwater against the Titans.
Girls tennis — Stillwater seniors Megan Scully and Jenna Wieden fall to eventual third-place finishers Rachael Click and Katie Carr of Rochester Mayo 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of the Class AA girls’ state tennis tournament. Joining older sisters Julie and Jessie, Jenna is one of three Wieden sisters to compete in the individual or team tourney at state for the Ponies. Wieden and Scully finish the season with an 11-2 record.
Golf — Afton native and Stillwater graduate Allie Blomquist earns non-exempt conditional status on the LPGA Tour following a strong showing at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. The University of Wisconsin standout finishes 32nd in the 130-player field, which makes her the fifth player on the non-exempt conditional list.
