Girls cross country: Ponies 5th at SEC meet

STACY — Abby Lange ran to a sixth-place finish to earn all-conference honors and help pace the Stillwater girls’ cross country team to a fifth-place showing in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference Meet at Falcon Ridge Golf Course.

Competing wet and muddy conditions, Lange covered the 4,000-meter course in 14:37, which was about 40 seconds behind individual medalist Bailey Ness (13:58) of East Ridge.

Behind a 1-2 finish with Ness and Emily Betz, the Raptors scored 31 points to hold off runner-up Forest Lake (69) and third-place Roseville (78). White Bear Lake and Stillwater followed in the fourth and fifth spots with 100 and 135 points.

Stillwater’s second through fifth runners were separated by just five spots, led by Haley Beech in 31st with a time of 15:40. Kyra Anderson was one spot back in 32nd at 15:42 while Cela Peterson (15:48) and Lauren Lampright (15:52) placed 34th and 36th. Claire Patterson (16:05) and Bria Eder-Zdechlik (16:05) finished 44th and 45th for the Ponies, who improved by one spot after placing sixth in the conference a year ago.

The conference meet allows teams to enter 10 runners in the varsity and the next three Stillwater runners were bunched up as Siri Brochman (16:28), Cassie Willaert (16:30) and Sofie Wicklund (16:30) finished 55th through 57th.

The Ponies are slated to compete at the Section 4AA meet on Wednesday at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

n Stillwater finished fourth in the JV race on Tuesday with 92 points. Roseville held off White Bear Lake 42-53 for the top spot while East Ridge followed in third at 68. Kendra Anderson paced the Ponies in third place with a time of 16:30 while Emma Rettner (16:56) and Emma Fischer (17:11) followed in 15th and 18th.
