Savannah Johnson — Girls tennis
Stepping into the No. 1 singles spot following the graduation of six-year standout Natalie Phippen, Savannah Johnson ha been rock solid at the top of Stillwater’s singles lineup this fall.
The sophomore lost just two games against Michaela Phelps of White Bear Lake in Tuesday’s section quarterfinal victory, which was the team’s sixth win in a row. She won by the same 6-1, 6-1 score against Phelps in last week’s 6-1 win over the Bears in their Suburban East Conference finale. Johnson also defeated Woodbury’s Shanna Stevenson 6-1, 6-1 in a 5-2 conference victory on Sept. 25.
The Ponies (7-2 SEC, 12-3), who finished third in the conference, face Mahtomedi in the section semifinals on Friday.
Austin Reed — Boys cross country
It has been a season filled with challenges for the Stillwater boys’ cross country team, but the Ponies have continued their winning ways with victories in three of five races this fall.
Senior Austin Reed stepped up in a big way on Tuesday as the Ponies held off state-ranked Eden Prairie and Hutchinson to win the Chaska Lions Invitational. Reed was Stillwater’s third finisher while placing 16th overall and, along with Alex Percival, helped the Ponies overcome the loss of one of their top runners Tayler Aarness, who did not compete because of illness, and varsity regular Edoardo Tagliaferri.
Stillwater will compete at the Alexandria Meet of Champions on Saturday.
