ARDEN HILLS — Squandering a fourth-quarter lead for the second week in a row, Stillwater fell to Mounds View 41-34 in double overtime on Friday at Mustang Stadium.
The Ponies (3-2 SEC, 3-2) led 27-14 with less than six minutes remaining, but Mounds View scored twice in the final minutes of regulation to even the score and kept Stillwater out of the end zone after scoring on its first two overtime possessions.
Mustangs fullback Matt Hunt scored on second down from three yards out in the second overtime period to take a 41-34 lead the Ponies were unable to match as Trevor Tillett’s pass to Alec Hill fell incomplete on fourth down from the 3 yard line.
The victory, combined with Cretin-Derham Hall’s 10-7 victory over previously unbeaten East Ridge (4-1, 4-1), leaves the Mustangs (4-1, 4-1) and Stillwater’s next opponent Roseville (4-1, 4-1) in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings.
This marked the second consecutive overtime loss for the Ponies, who led 28-0 in the third quarter before falling to Hastings 35-34 in overtime a week ago. This is also the first time the Ponies have lost consecutive games since 2007 when they started the season 1-3.
