OAK PARK HEIGHTS — Overcoming a lull after winning the first two games, Stillwater responded with a convincing victory in Game 5 to pull out a 3-2 Suburban East Conference volleyball victory over Hastings on Thursday at Stillwater Area High School.
The Ponies won by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 20-25, 18-25 and 15-7.
“The takeaway from the whole match was that we found our game and finished it and won,” Ponies coach Bob Fisher said. “It was maybe relaxing a bit much and not serving as tough as we had earlier in the match, but we were also just a bit too much on our heels all night and it really manifested itself in Games 3 and 4.”
The fifth game was close early on, but the Ponies (4-0 SEC, 8-4) closed on a 7-1 run to turn back Hastings and remain undefeated in league play. Janae Momchilovich helped cap another strong serving performance for the Ponies while taking the Ponies from 7 to 13 points in the deciding fifth game.
“Our serving is coming along,” said Fisher.
Stillwater has missed just one serve in its last two matches and finished with 10 aces against the Raiders.
“I give kudos to Rachel Fick coming off the bench and serving well and Carrie Brevitz continues to step right into to her new role,” Fisher said.
It was a balanced attack again for the Ponies on Tuesday, with Leah Richter and Stephanie Houle leading the way with eight kills apiece. Stephanie Dietrich, who joins Houle in the middle, added seven kills while Autumn Nyenhuis and Brevitz finished with six each. Eighth-grader Kayla Jerde chipped in with four kills.
Amelia Nora finished with just three kills, but two of those were resounding kills in the fifth game.
Janae Momchilovich spread the ball around with 22 set assists and Susan Evans finished with 12.
