Boys soccer: Balanced Ponies cruise past Hastings

HASTINGS — Six different players collected at least one goal on Thursday as Stillwater blanked Hastings 8-0 in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference boys’ soccer game at McNamara Stadium.

The Ponies, who improved to 3-0 in the SEC and 4-2 overall this season, remain unbeaten in their past 26 conference games dating back to a 2-1 overtime loss against White Bear Lake on Sept. 30, 2010.

Junior Max Stevens scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game as Stillwater jumped out to an early lead. Alex Jurcoi and Aropo Ojulu also found the back of the net in the first half as the Ponies built a 4-0 lead.

Cole Bardwell scored quickly in the second half before Aropo struck again to provide a six-goal cushion. Nathan Purdie followed with another goal for the Ponies and freshman Colman Farrington notched his first varsity goal to close out the scoring.

“Farrington and Aropo both had pretty goals. They showed what they could do,” Ponies coach Jake Smothers said.

The Ponies, which outshot Hastings 28-2, have been revamping their defense and the comfortable margin allowed them to focus on that and get everybody involved in the game — and the scoring, as it turned out.

“It was a learning experience and we talked about it on the bench of the middle of the second half,” Smothers said. “We got back to working through our patterns quite a bit.”
