OAK PARK HEIGHTS — It needed overtime to do so, but the Stillwater boys’ soccer team improved to 2-0 in Suburban East Conference play with Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall at Pony Stadium.
Aropo Ojulu scored the game-winner with just nine seconds remaining as the Ponies improved to 3-2-0 overall.
Stillwater outshot the Raiders 16-12 and appeared in control while holding a 1-0 lead, but gave up a corner kick goal with nine minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.
“We played quite well the first half and probably should have been up a couple, but Cretin definteily played better in the second half,” Ponies coach Jake Smothers said. “I thought we were in moderate control adn I didn’t feel like a goal was coming for them, but we struggled with corner kicks against Cedarburg (on Friday) and they had been pressing us for about three minutes. It was a scramble that one of their players knocked in. We have to do a better job of managing that particular moment.”
But Ojulu saved the day with an assist from Max Boedigheimer to complete a nifty transition goal.
“They broke so quickly, Max pushed a defender out of the way and Aropo only had defender to beat and made a cut and was right in front of the goal after the defender slid by,” Smothers said.
Stillwater struck first in the 23rd minute of the first half as Alex Jurcoi converted a penalty kick.
“We played well over the weekend, but gave up some goals we shouldn’t have,” Smothers said. “(Tuesday) they recomposed themselves (after giving up the goal) and pushed forward and got a win. It was good to see them take advantage of that.”
