COTTAGE GROVE — Taking the first step in its Suburban East Conference title defense, the Stillwater girls’ tennis team dispatched Park 7-0 in Thursday’s dual meet.
The Ponies (1-0 SEC, 3-0), who tied Mounds View for the league championship a year ago, lost just two games combined in four singles victories. Stillwater nearly matched that feat while sweeping the three doubles matches.
“It was a nice start to the conference season,” said Ponies coach Dave Kahl, whose team will host section rival Mahtomedi in a nonconference dual meet today.
Aliza Deming, who normally plays second singles for the Ponies, joined Hannah Quinn to deliver a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first doubles while Remi Larson and Emma Germundson dropped just one game in their triumph at No. 2 doubles. Lexie Sherrick and Amanda Williams added a 6-0, 6-0 win at third doubles.
Savannah Johnson led the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the first spot while Jenna Sherrick and Elizabeth Quinn followed with victories by the same score at third and fourth singles. Shelby Anderson moved up to second singles and defeated Carly Zwashka 6-2, 6-0.
n Stillwater also swept four exhibition matches on Thursday, including 8-0 singles victories from Clara Ilkka and Hannah Glasrud.
Emily Frenchik and Olivia Anderson won their doubles match 8-4 while Ponies teammates Kelia Deming and Eliza Weisberg prevailed by the score of 8-3.
