Yodeler Christensen performs at St. Peter LC

AFTON — Master yodeler Kerry Christensen brings his music and humor show to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Afton later this month as part of the church’s year-long 150th anniversary celebration.

Christensen performs yodeling songs from every culture. He is the former Disney World yodeler at Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla., and was the yodeling voice of the villian Alameda Slim in Disney’s animated movie, “Home on the Range.”

Christensen is perhaps the only full-time yodeler in the world who specializes in all yodeling styles. He can be strictly alpine, or he can put on his Stetson hat and do an all-cowboy yodeling show.  However, many of Kerry’s fans say that their favorite show is when Kerry mixes up the styles. You will hear cowboy, alpine, cajun, Latin, Jewish, Hawaiian, jazz, classical, and his always popular humorous yodeling renditions.

Christensen’s performance is 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at St. Peter LC, 880 Neal Ave. South in Afton. The event is free, but a free-will offering will be taken.

Another regular upcoming event at St. Peter LC is the church’s 58th annual ham dinner and fourth annual “car show” outside the church from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 8.
Cost is $12.50 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 years and free for children 5 years and younger. The church’s Country Store will be open that day and donations of canned goods and crafts are welcome for the store.

Harvest mass in Lake Elmo

LAKE ELMO — Del and Joan Eder’s Lake Elmo home is the site for the area’s annual harvest mass at 5 p.m. Aug. 24.

The mass at 4515 Julep Ave. North is open to all and includes a dinner following the service. Free-will donations are accepted.

Persons coming to the mass on Minnesota 36 should take Keats Avenue south and turn right at the stop sign. The Eders’ residence is the second house on the left. From Minnesota 5, travel north on Jamaca Avenue and turn right at the stop sign. Drive up the hill and the Eders’ house is the third driveway on the right.

Church hosts Sunday dinner

BAYPORT — Pot roast, vegetables, rolls and dessert are the menu when Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bayport hosts its annual “Second Sunday Supper” at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at the church located at 490 Fourth St.

The monthly meal is provided to create a social connection throughout the St. Croix Valley and all are welcome. Call the church at 651-439-3450 for more information.

Pipes and fire return Sept. 14

The Minnesota Police Pipe Band leads the parade to open the fourth annual “Bagpipes and Bonfires” festival Sept. 14 sponsored by the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Stillwater.

The parade steps off at 4 p.m., followed by the festival patterned after the history of the Anglican church featuring Old World games, pub grub, jugglers, mimes, street performers, a kilt contest and kids’ activities. Also performing are the Royal Scottish Country Dancers and Musicians.

The festival raises funds to support Ascension’s community activities and last year’s event drew 500 people from throughout the metro area.
