Erin Thiets was chosen the Most Valuable Player this spring for the Stillwater girls’ golf team, which made its fifth consecutive trip to the state tournament.
The Ponies finished fourth in the Suburban East Conference standings before winning the Section 4AAA tournament by two shots over runner-up Mahtomedi and placing eighth at state.
Thiets, a sophomore who was limited early in the season while recovering from knee surgery for an injury that occurred before the start of the basketball season, earned all-conference honors and led Stillwater with a 26th-place showing in the state tournament. Thiets was joined in earning All-SEC honors by teammate Leah Kroenning while Amanda Wolf and Maddie Luoma received honorable mention all-conference recognition.
Kroenning was named the Most Improved Player for the varsity team while Luoma garnered the Best Teammate Award.
In addition to the other awards handed out, Rachel Billingsley and Emily Landgreen were named MVPs for the JV and B-squad teams.
The Ponies did not name captains for the 2014 team following the resignation of coach Nate Schwarz, who recently accepted a teaching job in Texas after relocating there with his wife.
And while it will be with a new coach, Stillwater is expected to return its top 10 players from this season.
