Golf: Paulson finishes fifth at State Am; Deeg wins MWPGA Publinks

MEDINA — Youth prevailed on Wednesday as 20-year-old Sam Matthew of Midland Hills Country Club captured the 110th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship at Medina Golf & Country Club.

The former Roseville High School standout, who was the individual Suburban East Conference champion as a senior in 2011, posted a final-round 72 on Wednesday to clip Ben Welle of Village Green Golf Club (Moorhead) by one shot. Welle, the Day 1 leader after shooting a 69, carded 72s in the last two rounds to finish at 213. Former University of Minnesota player Robert Bell and Andy Jacobson of Eagle Creek Golf Club tied for third at 215.

Three Stillwater-area players made the cut and all three finished high enough to earn repeat trips next year — each of the top 15 players and ties earn exemptions.

Andy Paulson of Oak Glen Golf Club shot a 71 on Wednesday to tie for fifth place at 219. Paulson moved up from a tie for 12th place after shooting 74 each of the first two days.

Topher Baron of Sawmill Golf Club moved into a tie for 12th place after closing with a 72 in the final round to finish at 222. He entered the third round in a tie for 24th place. Will Hickey of StoneRidge Golf Club also joined Baron in a tie for 12th at 222, finishing with a 76 in the third round.

Deeg prevails at MWPGA State Publinks

JORDAN — Stillwater graduate and soon-to-be sophomore at the University of Nebraska Cassie Deeg edged Kristen Wagner in a playoff on Sunday to win the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association Public Links Championship at the Ridges at Sand Creek.

Deeg shot a 73 on Saturday to carry a one-shot lead into the second and final round, but was pushed to extra holes despite improving by two shots with a 71 on Sunday. Wagner, who joined another Stillwater graduate Paige Bromen to win the Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Four Ball Championship earlier this summer, shot a 70 in the second round to join Deeg with a 144 total. Deeg made par on the second playoff hole — after both players birdied the par-5 first hole to start the playoff — to secure the Public Links title for the second time in three years. She also won this title at Majestic Oaks in 2011.

Trailing by two shots with just two holes remaining, Deeg parred No. 17 to move into a tie as Wagner found the water with her tee shot and settled for a double bogey. Both players birdied No. 18 to remain tied and force a playoff.

Olivia Herrick of Manitou Ridge finished alone in third place, five shots behind Deeg and Wagner at 149.
