Peterson pens pictorial Stillwater history

071113_bpbookcoverA new book that takes a photographic look at Stillwater’s past will join an 8,500-book series later this month.

Brent Peterson, executive director of the Washington County Historical Society, recently wrote “Images of America: Stillwater” as part of the “Images of America.” book series.

History book publisher Arcadia Pubishing asked Peterson to add to 8,500 books in “Images of America” collection. Peterson’s book is a historic collection of photographs from Stillwater’s first days to the present and documents development of both Stillwater and the St. Croix River.

Topics covered include the logging industry, the prison and various businesses and residents who built the community. There are more than 200 vintage photographs accompanied by descriptive captions that tell the story of the “birthplace of Minnesota.”

Peterson hopes his book reminds residents of the “rich, deep history that is Stillwater” and helps them discover Stillwater is “more than a logging and tourist town and it continues to prosper up until today.”

Peterson worked on the book for six to eight months. It will be released for $21.99 at bookstores or through Arcadia Publishing, either online at or by calling 888-313-2665.
