10 years ago this week…


This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.


Girls hockey — After being named Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater girls’ hockey team, Sarah Connelly opts to continue her playing career at the University of North Dakota.


Boys tennis — Senior Ben Stark is chosen the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater boys’ tennis team — which finishes with a 13-3 record, including 5-2 to tie for second place in the Suburban East Conference. Holden Clauson, Trevor Willett and Nate Huff received all-conference honors for the Ponies.


Running — Stillwater’s Rob Whetham, 51, places first in his age group and is the top local finisher at the 27th Annual Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth with a time of 2:46.49. Vicki Ostendorf, 38, of Stillwater is the top women’s finisher among the locals with a time of 3:15.56.


Golf — Loggers Trail Golf Course, which sits alongside sister course Sawmill Golf Club, prepares to open its doors to the public — two weeks after members began playing the new 18-hole layout designed by Minnesota golf luminaries Mike Fermoyle, John Harris, Dave Tentis and Bev Vanstrum.
