MADRID, Iowa — Berger Olsen, 91, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Boone County Hospital in Boone. Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service celebrating Berger’s life is 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home where the family will greet friends following the service. Berger was born on Jan. 5, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Carl and Emma (Bertelsen) Olsen. He married Betty Lou Metcalf on Aug. 4, 1943, in Des Moines, and to this union two children were born, Linda and Jim. Berger owned and operated Plains Poultry Farms in Madrid. He was a member of the Danish Brotherhood, Model A Club, Iowa Grocers Association and the East High Alumni Association. Berger is survived by his children, Linda (Vince) Nehring of Stillwater, and Jim (Diana) Olsen of Madrid; his grandchildren, Angela Nehring-Dalrymple of Stillwater, and Scott (Jess) Olsen of Madrid; his great-grandchildren, Emma and Zoey Olsen of Madrid, and Callan Dalrymple of Stillwater, and his siblings, Mary Olsen-Riber of Des Moines, Don (Barb) Olsen of Rochester, Minn., and Harold (Carole) Olsen of Altoona. Berger was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister Elsie Johansen and grandson Steven Olsen. Memorial contributions can be made to the Madrid Home.
