DES MOINES, Iowa — Stillwater graduate and current Oregon Track Club team
member Ben Blankenship finished 10th in the 1,500 meters at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Drake Stadium. The former two-time individual state champion in the 1,600 meters for the Ponies finished in a time of 3:46.95.
Matthew Centrowitz crossed the line in 3:45.17 to win a slow, tactical race. By comparison, there were 18
runners in Thursday’s prelims who ran 3:43.82 or faster. Blankenship qualified for the finals after running a 3:41.66, which was the seventh fastest time recorded in the three preliminary heats.
Competing in the junior division at nationals, recent Stillwater graduate Wayde Hall finished 11th in prelims with a time of 3:57.67 and missed the finals in the 1,500 meters. Two runners who finished with slower times than Hall advanced to the finals from the other heat. Hall will join Ponies teammate Eric Colvin in continuing his running career at the University of Minnesota starting in the fall.
Justin Brinkley of Stanford University posted the fastest qualifying time at 3:49.90.
