This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Softball — After having its state title aspirations fall short in a 3-0 loss to eventual champion Eastview in the state semifinals, the Stillwater softball team finishes fourth after losing to Willmar 2-1 in 10 innings.
Girls track and field — After being slowed by shin splints during the season, Stillwater junior Ladia Albertson-Junkans finishes fourth in the 1,600- (5:03:09) and 3,200-meter (10:52.22) races at the state meet.
Boys track and field — Andrew Boldt, Elliot Saltzman, Jake Watson and Collin Bushman finish second at the state meet in the 4×800 relay with a time of 7:51.05 — finishing behind a Mankato West team (7:49.14) that eclipses the all-time state meet record of 7:49.15 held by Stillwater’s Pete Prince, Greg Wikelius, Kevin Doe and Chris Boldt since 1998. Watson also places seventh in the 3,200-meter race in a time of 9:26.43.
Awards — Whitney Windmiller is chosen MVP for the Stillwater girls’ golf team and Erin Johnson receives the Most Valuable Athlete Award for the Stillwater girls’ track and field team. After joining teammates Melanie Preiner, Mallory Olson and Chelsey Jones in earning all-conference honors, Tara Hayner is chosen MVP for the conference runner-up and section champion Stillwater softball team (22-8).
Colleges — Stillwater graduate Glen Perkins receives the Dave Winfield Pitcher of the Year Award from the University of Minnesota baseball team after posting a 10-2 record with an ERA of 2.91 and a school record 117 strikeouts in 105.1 innings.
