Erin Thiets — Girls golf
A serious knee injury prior to the start of the basketball season put her golf season in jeopardy, but Erin Thiets recovered in time to contribute to a successful season for the Stillwater girls’ golf team.
The sophomore helped lead the Ponies to a two-shot victory over Mahtomedi in the Section 4AAA tournament and provided the team’s top scores this week while competing at the state tourney at Bunker Hills. Thiets ranked 32nd after shooting an 84 in Tuesday’s opening round at state and followed that up with an 83 on Wednesday to move into a tie for 26th place at 167.
The Ponies placed fourth in the conference standings before winning the section title and placing eighth at state.
Eli Krahn — Boys track and field
Although just a freshman, Stillwater distance runner Eli Krahn has already collected some impressive hardware while helping the Ponies win their second state championship in three years and fifth overall.
Krahn finished second in the 3,200 meters at the state meet in a blistering time of 8:58.67 — which bettered the existing state meet record — and followed that up with a gold-medal performance in the 1,600 meters on Saturday. Krahn held off teammate Wayde Hall to win the 1,600 in a time of 4:09.38, which is a national record for a freshman. His times both events are the fastest in the nation this year by a freshman.
The Section 4AA champion Ponies also finished second at True Team state.
