COON RAPIDS — The Stillwater girls’ golf team stands eighth following Tuesday’s opening round of the Class AAA state tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
The Ponies turned in a Day 1 total of 363, which is 13 shots behind seventh-place Andover (350) in the eight-team field. Following a first-round 321, Edina carries a four-shot lead over Alexandria (325) and 11-shot advantage over defending state champion New Prague (332) into today’s final round.
Erin Thiets carded a pair of 42s to rank 32nd with a score of 84 after play on Tuesday and teammate Leah Kroening is three shots back in 48th after shooting 87 (43-44). Anna Kaul and Maddie Luoma completed the scoring at 93 and 99, placing them 68th and 79th among all individuals.
Katie Clark and Amanda Wolf finished at 107 and 108 for the Ponies, who placed second in this tournament the past two years.
A total of five players finished at par or better, led by co-leaders Alex Schmid of Shakopee and Sarah Burnham of Wayzata, who each posted 2-under-par 71s. Two-time defending state champion Celia Kuenster and Kenzie Neisen of New Prague or lurking one shot back after carding matching 72s. Sierra Langlie of Andover remains in fifth place with an even-par 73.
This marks the fifth consecutive state tournament appearance for Stillwater.
