Junior Taylor Lather became the first-ever St. Croix Preparatory Academy athlete to qualify for the state track meet after winning the 800-meter race in the Section 4A meet on June 1 at Macalester College. Lather posted a winning time of 2:20.87 for the Lions, who scored 31 points to place 12th out of 21 teams in the meet.
Lather will compete at the state meet, which is held Friday and Saturday at Hamline University.
“Taylor has worked extremely hard this year,” Lions coach John Vallez said. “She deserves every bit of success she has earned. She fell just short of qualifying for the state meet last year and made it her main goal to make it there this year. She is a fantastic person and makes running look effortless.”
Other top finishers for the Lions included Carly Scheuerman (4th in the 400) and Lauren Strohbehn (5th in the 1,600). Strohbehn, Amy Eckberg, Scheuermann and Lather also placed fifth in the 4×400 relay.
The SCPA boys placed 15th out of 23 teams with 18 points, led by Cameron Mehls with a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters and a fifth-place finish from Mehls, Ian Bramstedt, Michael Gutierrez and Nick Richardson in the 4×400 relay.
