Sports brief: ‘Mixed-Up Tennis Doubles Tourney’ set for June 29

The popular “Mixed-Up Tennis Doubles Tournament” will be held on Saturday, June 29 at the Stillwater Area High School tennis courts. The tournament is a fund-raiser for the Chuck Anderson Scholarship Fund.

The legendary coach always made sure having fun was a major part of the equation for his players and teams and it is in that spirit this event is conducted. Doubles teams can be all-male, all-female or mixed. Anyone interested in playing who may be in need of a doubles partner can also contact event organizer Marcy Laabs via email at [email protected] or by phone at 612-201-5833.

Anderson, who compiled more than 1,000 career victories before passing away in the fall of 2005 at the age of 69, coached 11 state championships teams, including the Stillwater boys in 1997. The Chuck Anderson Scholarship Fund Committee presents an annual scholarship award to a member of the girls’ and boys’ teams.

The tourney will use no-ad scoring with six-game pro sets. Teams losing three matches are knocked out of the tournament, but there will be opportunities to play with other teams who have lost three times. There will be numerous door prizes handed out to participants. Anyone interested in donating door prizes can contact event organizer Marcy Laabs.

Warm-up starts at 8:30 a.m., and the tourney begins at 9 a.m. Entry forms are available at the Stillwater Gazette office, which is located at 1931 Curve Crest Blvd., or via email by contacting Laabs at [email protected] Entry fee is $30 per team. Anyone unable to play can also make a donation check to the Independent School District #834 directed to the Chuck Anderson Scholarship Award Fund.
