Girls lacrosse: Top-seeded Ponies advance

The Stillwater girls’ lacrosse team began its Section 4 title defense with a 20-5 victory over upstart Tartan in the Thursday’s quarterfinals at Miller Field.

The top-seeded Ponies (12-2) will host Park, a 9-8 quarterfinal winner over White Bear Lake, in the semifinals on Saturday at Stillwater Area High School. Game time is 10 a.m. Stillwater defeated the Wolfpack 21-3 in their season opener at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center on April 24.

“We realize what you did before has no bearing on the next game,” Ponies coach Rick Reidt said. “We’re just going to continue to work hard in practice and take it one step at a time as we move through sections.”

Dana Almquist provided eight goals and one assist to lead the Ponies, who jumped out to a 14-2 halftime lead. Kate Sheely added six goals and Katie Casto chipped in with three.

“On offense, I thought we played well,” Reidt said. “Tartan is a brand new team with only six seniors and we thought they played well.”
