Reception, dinner honors distinguished alumni

The Partnership Plan honors the 2013 Distinguished Alumni with a reception and dinner at 6 p.m. June 7 at the Lake Elmo Inn Event Center.
The honorees are Bruce Beutel, Class of 1950; Dr. Edward Elgethun, Class of 1961; Hugh Madson, Class of 1949; and Harriet McPherson, Class of 1946. Tickets cost $25 per person and the evening includes a reception, dinner and program. Tickets can be purchased online at

Explore county parks free on Saturday

The Washington County Commissioners invite the public to Explore Your Parks Saturday with free admission to all county parks.
The main event is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve Swim Beach Area with a free family-friendly event featuring outdoor recreation demonstrations, live entertainment, food, and more.
Start the day by joining the lifeguards for a 5K/1K fun run/walk with free registration from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The 1K kids run begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 5K run/walk at 10 a.m. from the beach building. Fun run participants are included in a raffle for a free annual park pass good for all county parks.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. explore a variety of free, all-ages, outdoor recreation and activities including rock climbing, Zumba on the Beach, kayak demonstrations, outdoor yoga, Franconia spin art, camp scavenger hunt, s’mores, Nordic walking and more. Live music is provided by 2013 Grammy winners the Okee Dokee Brothers at 1 p.m.
At 7:15 p.m., Warner Nature Center presents a campfire program on barred owls at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve. The star of this program is an injured barred owl recovering at the Raptor Center.

Stillwater library offers business class

As part of its Computer Learning courses for adults, the Stillwater Public Library offers a class on How to Promote Your Business with Facebook from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The class is presented by Twin Cities Media Alliance and the Metropolitan Library Service Agency, and teaches attendees how to set up a business Facebook page, distribute consistent information, grow your fan base and set up editorial calendars. Gardeners’ group hosts plant sale, clinic

The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners in Washington County host their annual plant sale and clinic Sunday at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Baytown Township.
Home gardeners can buy plants and get free answers to their yard and garden questions.  The Diagnostic Clinic is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Plant Sale is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is in the 4-H Building at the County Fairgrounds at Minnesota 5 and Manning Avenue.
The plant sale features perennials from Master Gardeners’ home and demonstration gardens as well as vegetables, herbs, and annuals started from seed. At the Diagnostic Clinic, Master Gardeners and specially-trained tree care advisors, home insect control specialists and others will be on hand to answer questions. The public is encouraged to bring in plant or insect samples along with their gardening questions.
Sale proceeds will be used to support Master Gardener educational activities in the county.
