This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Softball — Stillwater hands Anoka its first (5-2) and second (4-0) losses of the season while storming back through the losers bracket to win the Section 4AAA championship and qualify for the state tournament. Kari Boughten throws back-to-back three-hitters for the Ponies, who improve to 21-6.

Synchronized swimming — First-place finishes in the short and long team events help lead the Stillwater synchronized swim team to its fifth consecutive state championship and 18th overall. Bridget Nelson, Caitlin Campbell and Lisa Kasperson earn all-state honors for the Ponies, who outlast St. Louis Park 117-106 for the top spot with Wayzata third with 66 points.

Boys golf — After leading the Ponies with a 38.625 stroke average in Suburban East Conference play, junior Chad Bischoff is chosen the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater boys’ golf team, which places fourth in the final league standings and 10th at the section tournament. Justin Magill garners the inaugural Phil Parizino Scholarship, which is presented by Gayle Parizino.
