Maddie Luoma — Girls golf
Playing in her first-ever section tourney, Maddie Luoma played liked a seasoned veteran while helping the Stillwater girls’ golf team earn its fifth straight trip to state.
The junior carded an 83 at Tanners Brook to lead the Ponies and finish third overall at the Section 4AAA tournament on Tuesday. Her efforts helped Stillwater to a two-shot victory over runner-up Mahtomedi. Luoma’s score on Tuesday was not completely unexpected, but she tied for fourth in Stillwater’s lineup with a 49.3 scoring average (nine holes) during the regular season. She also earned honorable mention All-SEC recognition.
The state meet is slated for June 11-12 at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
Sammy Sicard — Boys golf
Showing perseverance during an otherwise indifferent round, Stillwater’s Sammy Sicard finished strong on Tuesday at the Section 4AAA meet to earn a state bid.
The sophomore birdied three of the last four holes to shoot a 2-over 74 and punch his ticket to state. Sicard finished just two shots behind medalist Matt Pitcher (72) of section champion White Bear Lake. Sicard, who will be joined at state by teammate Evan Anderson, helped the Ponies to a third-place finish with a score of 302 — the team’s second-lowest total of the season. Sicard also earned All-SEC honors this season as the Ponies placed fourth in the conference.
Sicard and Anderson will compete at the state tourney on June 11-12.
