Maria Morley — Girls track and field
A steady performer and leader for the Stillwater girls’ track and field team, Maria Morley helped lead the Ponies to a sixth-place finish in Friday’s Class AAA True Team state meet at Stillwater Area High School.
The senior, who also served as captain and was MVP for the cross country team in the fall, placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.26 to provide Stillwater’s top individual finish at True Team state. She also anchored the winning 4×800 relay team (9:35.79) that also included teammates Bria Eder-Zdechlik, Hannah Anderson and Larissa Colvin.
The Ponies are competing at the SEC championships today and will host the Section 4AA Meet on May 28 and 30.
Connor Johnston — Baseball
You’ll be hard pressed to find a hitter on a season-long hot streak like Stillwater catcher Connor Johnston this spring.
In 19 games this season, the senior is batting a team-high .570 with 21 RBIs and a slugging percentage nearly .900 to help the Ponies rebound from a 2-6 start to the season. Johnston has also been rock solid behind the plate, throwing out seven of the 11 runners trying to steal. Johnston singled and doubled in Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Henry Sibley. He also drove two hits in Monday’s 2-0 win over SEC champ Mounds View and totaled five hits and four RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of White Bear Lake on Friday.
Stillwater (10-8 SEC, 11-8) hosts White Bear Lake in its section opener Thursday.
