Girls golf: Stillwater finishes second in SEC events

 

HASTINGS — It was a productive day for the Stillwater girls’ golf team on Monday at Hastings Country Club.

Playing two separate Suburban East Conference matches — one on each nine — the Ponies placed second behind East Ridge in both.

Stillwater tied Woodbury for second place with a score of 182 following play on the front nine and finished solo second after carding a 179 total on the back nine. East Ridge turned in scores of 180 and 175 to finish two and four shots in front of the Ponies and pull into a first-place tie with Forest Lake atop the conference standings with 61 points.

The Ponies enter Thursday’s conference tournament in fourth place with 49 points, which is just three behind Woodbury (52), but 12 behind the Rangers and Raptors.

Anna Kaul led the Ponies with a 42 on the front nine while Maddie Luoma followed with a 44 to start a stellar day for the junior. Erin Thiets and Sydney O’Neal followed with matching 48s to fill out the team card for Stillwater.

Luoma added a team-best 42 on the back nine while O’Neal contributed a 45. Thiets and Leah Kroenning each added a 46 while Kaul (48) and Amanda Wolf (50) were not far behind.

As has been the case all season, Cretin-Derham Hall’s Celia Kuenster captured medalist honors with a 38-37—75.

Duluth road trip

At Duluth, the Stillwater girls’ golf team placed fourth at tournaments on Friday and Saturday in Duluth.

The Ponies placed fourth in Friday’s nine-team Ridgeview Invitational at Ridgeview Country Club and followed that up with the same finish in Saturday’s six-team Northland Invitational at Northland Country Club.

Stillwater’s Erin Thiets led the Ponies with an 85 on Friday while Maddie Luoma and Amanda Wolf followed at 91 and 93. Leah Kroenning finished with a 98 to put the finishing touches on a 367 team total that left the Ponies trailing fifth-ranked Edina (323), Elk River (363) and Grand Rapids (364).

Emily Romanow of Edina claimed medalist honors with a 74.

Thiets finished just five shots behind Romanow on Saturday as Edina won again, this time with a score of 335. The Ponies turned in a score of 379 to finish behind the Hornets, Prior Lake (364) and East Ridge (378).

Leah Kroenning was next for the Ponies with a 91 and Maddie Luoma finished at 99. Amanda Wolf completed the scoring with a 109.
