Boys lacrosse: Balanced scoring, fast start carry Ponies

HASTINGS — Senior Chris Rick collected 10 ground balls to become Stillwater’s career leader in that category while also contributing a goal to help send Stillwater to a 7-1 Suburban East Conference boys’ lacrosse victory over Hastings on Monday.

Rick, who is also on pace to break his own single season record for faceoffs won, was a perfect 8 for 8 in winning possession against the Raiders.

Sam Sagissor and Brandon Jungmann each delivered two goals to pace the Ponies (7-1 SEC, 9-3), who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and were never seriously challenged throughout the remainder of the game.

“I think we played four full quarters tonight,” Ponies coach Ryan Clark said. “We possessed the ball successfully and held our opponent to limitetd possessions on defense. Our game plan was to own the balland we did that by being fundamental in ground balls, staying out of the penalty box, being composed in the clearing game and being patient on offense.”

Jeff Petersen and Matt Kaye joined Rick with a goal each for Stillwater.

Zach Shockency and Blake Bornstein split goaltending duties and a fourth-quarter tally by the Raiders was the only thing keeping the Ponies from a shutout.

“We have had a great practice culture lately,” Clark said. “Our guys are buying in and are ready to play. We are hosting Mounds View on Thursday night and we know they are going to come ready to play. We have a game plan that, if we execute well, should lead us to being successful. We recently promoted a few more guys up to the varsity and they are excited to play in the big show. We can’t wait for Thursday night.”
