MAHTOMEDI — Less than a week after meeting in a nonconference dual meet, Mahtomedi showed its strength on Thursday while eliminating the Stillwater boys’ tennis team in the Section 4AA quarterfinals.
The top-seeded Zephyrs prevailed 7-0 for the second time in less than a week, this one ending Stillwater’s season with a 3-10 record.
“The scores look similar, but it was a much better played match and the guys really competed well,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “We just faced a team that was better.”
Mahtomedi advances to face fourth-seeded St. Paul Highland Park, a 4-3 winner over White Bear Lake, in the semifinals on Monday. The other semifinal features No. 2 seed Roseville vs. No. 6 seed St. Paul Harding, which upended third-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall 4-3 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
