HASTINGS — The Stillwater boys’ golf team finished fifth in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference meet at Hastings Country Club, but maintained its grip on second place in the standings heading into next week’s conference tournament.
Hastings posted a victory on its home course with a score of 304, but Forest Lake (305) finished just one shot behind in second place to increase its lead over Stillwater in the conference standings to six points (39-33). East Ridge finished third with a score of 308 and Mounds View finished strong behind individual medalist Ryan Gallagher to finish at 313, one shot ahead of Stillwater’s 314 total.
The SEC Tournament will be held on Tuesday at Indian Hills Golf Club. Before then, the Ponies are scheduled to compete at the Albert Lea Invite on Friday and Saturday and the Duluth East Invitational at Northland Country Club on Monday.
Lars Lillehei led the Ponies with a 75 and Sammy Sicard wasn’t far behind at 77. Evan Anderson chipped in with a 79 and Tyler Fitzsimmons filled out the team card with an 83. It was the second solid round in a row for Lillehei at Hastings Country Club, where he claimed medalist honors with a 73 during a 21-team invitational earlier this month.
“Normally three scores in the 70s and a low 80 works in high school golf, but so much in this conference,” Scanlon said. “We would much rather play against these types of teams. It is great preparation for sections and, for some individuals, college golf.
“Hastings is a challenging course — the site of last year’s state amateur. “It speaks well of Lars that he can handle this course.”
Crosby Joy struggled down the stretch and joined teammate Tony Pulido in carding an 85 on Thursday.
“We probably spent eight or nine shots on those last three holes,” Scanlon said.
