Girls lacrosse: Stillwater clinches SEC title

FOREST LAKE — Holding Forest Lake scoreless for nearly 21 minutes to start the game, Stillwater pulled away for a 21-7 Suburban East Conference girls’ lacrosse victory over Forest Lake on Wednesday night.

The victory clinches at least a share of the conference title for the Ponies (8-0 SEC, 10-0), who have outscored their conference opponents by a combined 158-47 this season. The SEC title is the fifth in a row for Stillwater, which can wrap it up outright with a victory over Hastings on Monday.

Stillwater also has tough nonconference games on the schedule before starting section play, including games at Blake on Saturday and Eden Prairie on Tuesday. Blake and Eden Prairie have played for the state championship all seven years since the Minnesota State High School League began sponsoring a state tournament.

Nine different players scored for Stillwater to lead a balanced attack while jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first half. Dana Almquist led the Ponies with six tallies while Carter Sanderson added four goals.

“Forest Lake is an improved team over last year and in the second half and the score was 7-5 in the second half,” Ponies coach Rick Reidt said. “We had a good first half, but we need to be more careful with the ball because that’s where we had problems in the second half.”

Kate Sheely and Elle Anderson each chipped in with two goals for Stillwater.

“(Midfielder) Miranda Meier played one of her best games ever, with very nice passing and she scored a goal off a nice dodge,” Reidt said. “Hannah Dick played really strong on defense. She has a lot of speed, which really helps out.”
