Downtown dispute ends with broken deck, citations

A dispute that began during a birthday party at a downtown Stillwater nightspot ended with a broken deck at a home and citations for two men on May 9.

Stillwater Police officers responded to a call about an assault at a home on the 900 block of Seventh Street South in the early morning hours on May 9, according to a police report.

Reports said the designated driver for the group told officers several people were celebrating a woman’s birthday at the nightspot when the birthday girl’s boyfriend took her keys and drove the woman’s car to his home after he apparently neglected to pay his part of the bar tab.

The man then received a text message from his girlfriend telling him that her cousin was coming to the man’s house, the report said. The woman told officers her cousin was retrieving her car and she was very upset that her boyfriend left in her car.
The group’s designated driver told officers he picked up the group downtown and took the woman and her cousin to the boyfriend’s house so the woman could retrieve her vehicle, the report said.

The cousin got into a verbal dispute with the boyfriend at the house that turned physical on the deck area, the report said. Both the cousin and the boyfriend fell off the deck and broke two railings. The cousin and boyfriend were not injured, but were cited for disorderly conduct after officers determined the incident was a mutual altercation.

Body recovered from river shore

LAKELAND — Investigators with the Washington County Sheriff’s and Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s offices are trying to identify a badly decomposed body found on the St. Croix River shore in Lakeland Tuesday.

WCSO deputies were called to the 900 block of Quinton Avenue South where the body was found, according to Cmdr. Brian Mueller.

The body appeared to have been in the water for a long period and had suffered significant decomposition that prevented deputies from determining an identity, Mueller said.

An investigation is continuing, Mueller added.

The SCCSO identified the deceased driver as Darlene R. Breault, 74 of Houlton. Authorities said the driver of the second car, Becky Lee Markfort, 27, of New Richmond, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment.

Sheriff’s office investigators said evidence at the accident scene indicates Breault was leaving a parking lot in the 1400 block of Hilltop Drive in Houlton to travel west when Breault’s car was struck on the driver’s side by Markfort’s vehicle traveling north on STH 36/45. Both vehicles came to rest on the concrete median divider.

The parking lot is controlled by a stop sign and both vehicles stopped  at the median.
A passenger in Markfort’s vehicle, Michelle Frazee, 35, of New Richmond was unhurt, according to a SCCSO statement. Occupants of both vehicles were wearing seat belts and there was a stop sign at the parking lot, investigators added.

St. Joseph Fire/Rescue and Lakeview EMS assisted with the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the SCCSO.
