Girls track and field: Stillwater runs to True Team section title

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — On the strength of seven first-place finishes and a total of 17 top-three placings, the Stillwater girls’ track and field team held off East Ridge and the remainder of the field to win Thursday’s Section 2AAA True Team meet at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies scored 785 points to outdistance East Ridge (689.5) by more than 95 points. Woodbury was a distant third at 539.5. The victory qualifies the Ponies for the state meet on May 17 — Stillwater’s 22nd appearance in the 27-year history of this popular event.

In addition to victories in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays, the Ponies received a sweep of the top two places in the hurdle races. Cecelia Peterson won the 100 (15:50) and 300 (47.74) hurdles while teammates Brooke Hunter (15.58) and Shelby Litchy (47.94) followed her in second place.

Stillwater also racked up points in the triple jump where Skyler Adkins (34-8 1/2) and Rachel Amos (34-0) finished first and second and Annika Anderson (33-0) followed in fourth place. Fiona Montie (1:01.55) and Natalie Phippen (1:02.68) placed first and third for the Ponies in the 400 meters.

Dayshia Coleman provided one of the big highlights for Stillwater in the shot put with a winning toss of 37-5 1/2 — a personal best by about two feet for the versatile senior.

The Ponies also received runner-up finishes from Fiona Montie (200 meters) and Maria Morley (800) and third-place efforts from Litchy (100), Larissa Colvin (3,200), Skyler Adkins (high jump) and Alex Holmberg (pole vault).
